TCK #99

Many have asked, but st3v had nothing to do with bees grounding a flight in Houston this week. Though he would’ve gladly helped if they just stopped by the shop!

Printed vaccines could expedite future outbreak response. MIT researchers’ mobile printer creates vaccines that can be stored at room temp. for months.

  • Capable of printing 100s per day

  • Printed vaccines = patches with microneedles

  • Especially helpful in areas lacking traditional medical infrastructure

Mobile printing enables nearly on-demand generation, including RNA vaccines. Current research is focused on Covid variants, but plans to expand to other viruses soon. Ink cartridge replacements by prescription only.

Cyberpunk tattoos can help monitor patients’ hearts. Researchers used 3D and circuit printing to develop a temporary tat.

  • Records heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG data

  • Roughly as thick as 2 human hairs

  • Easily replaced battery lasts 40 hours

Real-time data is bluetoothed to a local smartphone before reaching medical professionals. Enabling patients to live a more “normal” life while their hearts are closely monitored. Can’t wait to see these in zebra-gum packs.

New gene therapy sends cells back in time, sort of. Scientists developed a way to reverse NAION-caused blindness in primates.

  • NAION = Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

  • Aka decreased blood flow to the optic nerve

  • New therapy reprograms cells to an ideal state

Think of it like resetting a crashed computer to a stable configuration. Further review is in progress and could lead to a reliable treatment for age-related blindness. Huh, hindsight really is 20/20.
