Chimpanzeuticals | Shocked Love | Hidden Moon

Issue #159

I’m out of my cast!

In case you missed it, my write wrist has been in a cast for the past 5 weeks. Along with acting like a chrysalis for broken bones, it prevented me from drawing st3v. It’s still a bit tough to draw, so he’ll be back with us next week!

Chimpanzeuticals

Would you trust a chimp’s medical advice? Researchers observed wild chimpanzees in Uganda using plants with medicinal properties.

  • Study: 4 years following injured or sick chimps

  • Focusing on unusual eating behaviors while sick/injured

  • 90% of plants samples tested inhibited bacterial growth

All chimps followed during the study made full a recovery. While this doesn’t prove the plant treatments worked, our distant cousins may helps us discover new medicines if we can protect their habitats. This stuff is bananas!

Shocked Love

Getting shocked is good for the heart! Coronary bypass patients experienced improved recovery from shockwave therapy during surgery.

  • Trial: checked oxygenated blood of 63 patients 1 year after surgery

  • Shockwave recipients: 11.3% increase

  • Control group: 6.3% increase

Shockwave patients also reported higher quality of life and greater physical capability. The therapy may be approved this year and available as soon as 2025. Gotta love it.

Hidden Moon

The moon’s hidden side is now on Earth. China’s Chang'e-6 mission brought back our first ever samples from the lunar far side.

  • Chang’e = Chinese moon goddess

  • 53 days from launch to return landing

  • 4.4 lbs. of samples were drilled, scooped, and sent back

Both the US and China hope to establish a base on our celestial satellite. China’s 2nd landing on the far side will shed light on the moon’s origins and terrain variety. Still no word on its cheese content…
