Remote Bees | smARTist | Auto X - The Convo Kit #43

Are you a robot? Same here, definitely not a robot. So many artificial intelligence stories in one week is just a coincidence. Though, I am having a lot of trouble passing this captcha test…

BFH: Beekeep From Home

Even beekeepers can work remotely in 2021. Beewise’s BeeHome automates climate control, harvesting, and other beekeeping practices you can manage without a special suit.

  • Automated bee care, 24/7

  • 1 Beehome houses 24 colonies

  • Price: $400 per month

75% of the world's food crops partially depend on animal pollination. Beehomes reduce unnecessary loss of production with real-time colony support. Which means Pooh may finally satisfy that rumbly in their tumbly.

Dalí x WALL·E

OpenAI’s new AI system creates images based on simple text prompts. “DALL·E 2” incorporates shading, reflections, and textures to create original content.

  • Uses Deep Learning to understand connections between objects

  • Can also create variations of existing art

  • Includes “Inpainting” = photoshop, but with text prompts

Aside from being a cool toy to play with, DALL·E 2 can teach us how AI understands our world. To mitigate risks (i.e. deep fakes) OpenAI is testing with small groups. A waitlist to join is available in the link below.

Bonus: DALL·E 2 created this week’s cover image based on: “Teddy bears working on new AI research on the moon in the 1980s”

X-Ray Automation

Chest x-rays in the EU can now be reviewed by AI. Oxipit’s ChestLink received “CE mark certification”, similar to FDA clearance in the US.

  • ChestLink reviews x-ray images for abnormalities

  • Abnormalities trigger a human radiologist review

  • 6 month audit of prior imaging is required before use

Processing the majority of healthy x-rays, ChestLink enables radiologists to spend more time on patients in need of care. Now that Oxipit has been certified, we can expect AI to start staring into our souls in 2023.

Catching a Rocket

Tired: Landing a rocket booster for reuse

Wired: Rocket Lab catching a booster with a helicopter

  • Orbital booster will be caught over the ocean near New Zealand

  • Successfully tested on a replica in 2020

  • Helicopter will snag a parachute trailing the booster

Rocket Lab believes catching rockets is their best bet for reusable orbital launchers. Boosters will be descending ~22 mph as a modified Sikorsky S-92 swoops in for the save. A 14 day launch window opens up April 19th.

Fresh Prints

Anker’s M5 3D printer brings high tech printing to your desk. Users can download, print, and even watch from a companion app.

  • Max Part Size: 9.25 x 9.25 x 9.84”

  • Print Speed: 9.84“ per second (5x faster than competitors)

  • Price: $599 (Kickstarter) or $759 (est. retail)

The M5 should make 3D printing more accessible to interested hobbyists without endless time to tinker. The companion app even generates a time-lapse video for 3D-printfluencers.
