Spidey Scents | Jelly Skelly | genomeGPT
Issue #187

I’ve been playing around with Google’s NotebookLM to create an AI podcast of last week’s Genome Joggers.
It’s pretty wild and I’d really appreciate if you gave it a quick listen! (6 min)

Spidey Scents
Spiders have many legs, eyes, and “noses”. Researchers discovered how male spiders use wall-pore sensilla to detect odors.
Wall-pore sensilla = hairs along the upper leg
Present on most spider species
But only on males
Males use their leg-nose-hairs to detect female pheromones for mating. Future research will determine how female olfactory systems work, and possibly uncover other scent-related spidey tasks. Hear me out…
Quick! (vote)If you were a spider, which insect smells better? |

Jelly Skelly
The future of bone repair could be jelly. Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology developed a hydrogel that hardens into a bone-regenerating solid.
Injects as gel, turns solid when exposed to light
Enhances natural bone cell growth
Potentially safer than bone-grafting alternatives
As the bone regrows, hydrogel biodegrades leaving only natural bone tissue. Great news for lab rats, though still pending human trials. Can’t wait for my doctor to ask if I’m gellin’.
genomeGPT
AI knows our cells better than we do. Columbia University developed a system that predicts gene activity in human cells.
Identifies cellular “grammar” rules
Like chatGPT for genomes
The system can predict long-term mutation effects and potentially aid in therapeutic discoveries. Next up, researchers will explore our genome’s “dark matter”, areas that don’t contain known protein-encoding genes. Sounds like a wild Magic School bus trip.
